Composites are the mean of choice in order to meet the different requirements, that are given on a material or technical concepts (e.g. multifunctional, design, weight, costs). In almost all areas of life, composites are used and further product developments are being advanced. For instance, the use of carbon fiber-reinforced materials (CFRP) will almost double by 2020 compared to 2014 (to 89,000 Mg carbon fibers). The use of glass-fiber reinforced plastics (GRP) is already at a high level in Europe.

The construction sector plays an important role here. In addition to its social importance it has a high resource relevance (e.g. 60% of resources and 35% of energy consumption as well as over 50% of waste per year in Germany).
In the construction sector, large markets for composite materials have emerged in the past few years (e.g. textile concrete, ETICS, carbon and glass-fiber reinforced components, intelligent wall systems) and further growth markets are forecasted.

The ‘Forschungskolleg Verbund.NRW’ examines composite materials in the construction sector for the entire value chain and addresses the societal challenges of ‘climate protection, increasing resource efficiency and raw material recovery’.

At the Chair of Management Accounting

The Chair of Management Accounting examines within the ‘Forschungskolleg’ new value-added architectures based on innovative composites. Therefore we use the concept of relative sustainability, where relevant substitution treatments are included. The business model capability of the innovative composites is assessed by means of the life cycle costing taking into account value losses and realizable learning effects.
