Reallabor für verNETZte E-Mobilität

E-mobility makes an important contribution to reducing emissions in the transport sector and thus forms a key component of the energy transition. However, increasing market penetration of electric vehicles will result in rising demand for electricity. On the one hand, this means increased complexity in the power grid; on the other hand, it opens new opportunities in the field of sector coupling, for example using electric vehicles as decentralized energy storage systems.

The research project “unIT-e2 - Reallabor für verNETZte E-Mobilität” is investigating how electromobility can be optimally integrated into the power grid in four field trials. To approach the complex topic from all sides, 29 partners from the automotive and energy industries, IT and charging infrastructure as well as science are participating in the joint project. The focus is on the user-friendly, large-scale implementation of bidirectional charging concepts. The three-year project is being funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWi). The project will develop holistic solutions for the further ramp-up of electromobility. A budget of over 60 million euros is available for the realization of field trials in the urban areas of Munich and Düsseldorf as well as rural field trials in eastern Bavaria, Lower Saxony, and northern Hesse.

Within the subproject research, the Chair of Management Accounting is conducting total cost of ownership (TCO) analyses for electric vehicles from the consumer perspective based on previously defined use cases. Starting from a basic TCO analysis, the influences of various innovative business models and supplier-side cooperation models as well as standardization and complexity reduction on the TCO of an electric vehicle will be investigated over the course of the project. The goal is to create an optimized TCO that considers a wide variety of new aspects. The broad data basis required for this is generated, among other things, by cooperation with the different project clusters as well as with project partners from industry and science.

In addition, the Chair of Management Accounting is represented in the project cluster Heav-E. The Heav-E cluster is investigating the network impact of a high market penetration of private and commercial e-vehicles and their charging processes in a large-scale field test in the region of northern Hesse. The project partners involved are EAM Netz GmbH, FfE, Flavia IT Management GmbH, Power Plus Communications AG, Regionalmanagement Nordhessen GmbH, RWTH Aachen University, University of Kassel, and Volkswagen AG. The focus is on comparing and exchanging the perspectives and objectives of the energy and automotive industries for a holistically optimized integration of the mobility and energy transition. In this context, different incentive systems and their impact on the charging behavior of electric vehicle users and the resulting utilization of the distribution grid infrastructure will be investigated. Furthermore, different energy-related data (smart meter gateway, station measurements, etc.) and vehicle or charging infrastructure data will be merged. This is intended to ensure reliable control of the charging infrastructure based on suitable protocols (e.g., Open Charge Point Protocol and EEBUS), considering the amendment of §14a EnWG.
